Soccer Skills to Focus on this New Year

Soccer Skills to Focus on this New Year

Now that 2025 is here and has kick started a whole new year of possibilities, it’s the perfect time to reflect on your past performance, set new goals, and push yourself to become a better soccer player! When you look back on 2024 at a glance, was there anything you wished you spent more time improving on? Treat 2025 as your blank slate to improve your technical skills, boost your fitness or even grow your general soccer knowledge so you can make better decisions on the field.

Taking the initiative to start is the first step, but forming a clear plan on how to reach your specific goals can make all the difference and keep you on track. It took our favourite powerhouse players, like Messi and Ronaldo, years to master their soccer skills and countless hours of drills that translated to a better performance on the pitch. A great way to ensure your soccer skills are reached this year is by setting SMART goals. SMART stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals. The main idea is to give yourself a set plan to follow, which in turn will make tracking your progress easier. For example, instead of saying “I want to get better at passing,” say, “I will practice 40 short passes and 20 long passes every single day for the next 3 months.”

Now that you have a better understanding of how to improve your soccer skills more efficiently in the new year, let’s breakdown some ideal skills to focus on that will improve your overall game!

Passing Accuracy

The saying “there’s no ‘I’ in team” is also true when it comes to soccer! The ability to accurately pass the ball to teammates is crucial for maintaining possession and setting up opportunities for players to score. To work on improving your passing skills be sure to practice precision when executing short passes, long passes and crosses during drills.

Dribbling

Dribbling skills are essential for moving the soccer ball across and up the pitch. It also allows players to navigate through opponents, maintain control under pressure, and create space on the field. You can work on mastering your dribbling skills this year through one-on-ones, gate dribbling, dribble attack, and knockout.

Agility & Speed

Two critical soccer skills that go hand-in-hand on the pitch are agility and speed. Agility and speed are what allow a striker to score or a midfielder to make plays. These skills help a player move swiftly across the field, pass to players, and prevent opposing players from gaining control of the ball. Some great methods to improve your agility and speed skills are by practicing sprints, agility ladder drills, tuck jumps, ball taps, or even friendly races.

Ball Control

Having control of the ball is one of the best skills a player can possess as it allows you to gain and keep control of the ball. The ability to control the ball with both feet, while also receiving, directing, and shielding the ball is key. A great way to hone these skills during practice is by focusing on drills that emphasize touch, feel, and ball manipulation.

Mental Training

A soccer player is challenged mentally just as much as physically on the pitch. Feeling confident, maintaining focus in chaos, and the ability to stay calm under pressure are all qualities that make a great player. Set some time to work on developing your mental toughness in 2025. Some methods to achieve this are practicing positive self-talk, getting comfortable with constructive criticism and, above all, learning from your mistakes!

Fake Out

Another soccer skill to work on this year is known as a fake out. A fake out, or feint, in soccer is a freestyle move where a player tricks the other team into thinking they’re moving in one direction when they’re actually moving in another. Fake outs can be used for passes, shots, or forward and backward motions. One popular fake out method to try out involves lunging in one direction to then quickly dribble the ball in another direction. Training to do the perfect fake out involves working on your agility, speed, and turning while off your feet.

Shooting

The main goal of soccer is, of course, to score goals! So, focusing on your shooting skills is also a must for the new year. Shooting to score requires a level of accuracy, power and the ability to shoot from any distance or angle. The easiest way to improve your shooting accuracy is by practicing taking shots against a goalkeeper. You can also do other soccer drills like shooting while in a run, bouncing ball shots, and first touches.

Whether you’re a seasoned player looking to master your abilities, or are just starting out on your soccer journey, working on developing these skills will improve your overall performance. Set yourself up for success by practicing the basics like passing and dribbling or go for something more advanced like executing the perfect fake out. Get ready to unlock your potential on the field in 2025 through continuous practice, dedication and love for the beautiful game!
