Group Stage Highlights

This tournament has been full of firsts, and the group stages weren’t any different! Switzerland kicked things off by breaking records with a crowd of 34,063 fans in attendance for their opening match against Norway. It was the largest crowd for a women’s football (or soccer as we call it) match ever in the country. But that’s not all! When it was time for the final group matches to start, over 600,000 tickets were sold, breaking the record for overall ticket sales from EURO 2022 before a ball was even kicked! Throughout it all, every group delivered masterful performances that had fans on the edge of their seats! Group A rose to the top with a perfect record and eight goals, which was their most successful group performance ever. While hosts Switzerland secured a last-minute draw to reach their first-ever Women’s EURO quarter-final appearance. Group B was dominated by none other than the reigning world champions, Spain, who scored a whopping 14 goals in just three games, tying the EURO record. Italy fought for their place as runners-up despite a 3-1 loss to Spain. In Group C, Sweden beat Germany 4-1 and claimed the top spot. Germany still made it through despite falling behind and shouldn’t be underestimated going into the knockout stage. Finally in Group D, France outshined the rest, scoring 11 goals and adding three wins to their impressive resume. The defending champions, England, were close behind, bouncing back from an opening loss quickly to dominate their final two matches. No one scored more than Spain in the group stage, not even close. With a confident squad at their arsenal, the reigning world champions are expected to carry on their success in the quarter-finals. Sweden is also shaping up to be strong contenders, topping their group and demolishing Germany in the process. While hosts Switzerland are desperate for their own fairytale ending and after their last-minute qualification, we're predicting they won’t go down without a fight!
