The Worst Soccer Transfers Of All Time
When it comes to soccer, the only thing more unpredictable than a match is the transfer season where hundreds of players are moved from team-to-team around the world! Every fan has dreamed of at least one player being signed with their favourite club and taking it to the next level, but sometimes the move ends up leading to their downfall. Regardless of how talented a player is and how big their price tag is, no one can truly predict how well a player is going to fit in with another club until they see it in action. From Neymar’s record-breaking fee to Fernando Torres’s unlucky streak, there are some famous player transfers that soccer fans wish they could forget. Here’s a breakdown of the worst soccer transfers of all time and what made them such a flop!
1. Neymar Jr. - Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain (2017)
We had to start off the list with one of the most shocking transfers of all time! In 2017, Neymar broke the world’s transfer record at the time with his €222 million move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain. The transfer was supposed to be the start of a new era for the powerhouse club and take them to Champions League glory. But it ended up becoming one of the biggest disappointments of the transfer market. Neymar had a few great moments with PSG throughout the six years, but his time was tainted by injuries, clashes with teammates, and drama in general. Despite the club having domestic success with Neymar as part of the squad, they couldn’t achieve the international success they hoped for. His high price tag is now considered a warning to other clubs that money can’t buy everything!
2. Philippe Coutinho - Liverpool to Barcelona (2018)
Another famous player transfer that soccer fans wish they could forget is Phillippe Coutinho when he moved from Liverpool to Barcelona in 2018. When he first transferred to Barcelona from Inter Milan, it ended up putting him on everyone's radar as one of the most talented players at the time. He dominated alongside his squad members, which included world-class players like Luis Suarez, Mohamed Salah, and Robert Firmino. In 2018, he received the offer to move to Barcelona and thought it would take his career to the next level. Instead, it ended up being one of the worst decisions he could’ve made. All of the promise he showed at Liverpool disappeared, resulting in injuries and eventually being loaned out to Bayern Munich where he scored twice against Barcelona in the 2020 Champions League tournament.
3. Eden Hazard - Chelsea to Real Madrid (2019)
Next up on our list of worst soccer transfers of all time is a player who needs no introduction. After several years of being known as one of the best players in the Premier League with Chelsea and Cristiano Ronaldo leaving Real Madrid, Eden Hazard thought that making the €115 million transfer would be a dream come true. It ended up being his biggest downfall after he struggled with injuries, weight gain and lots of criticism. Throughout his four years with Real Madrid, he only scored seven goals out of 76 appearances. Hazard sadly retired from professional soccer not long after in 2023 with many fans believing the transfer from Chelsea to Real Madrid led to the death of his legendary career!
4. Antoine Griezmann - Atlético Madrid to Barcelona (2019)
Out of all the worst transfers in history, there’s one that stands out because it reminds us that you can always go back home! When Antoine Griezmann decided to leave Atlético Madrid, a club that led him to becoming one of the world’s most powerful attackers, he had the best intentions. Barcelona’s €120 million strategy was centered around Griezmann forming an alliance with fellow attackers Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi for an unbeatable partnership. Unfortunately, they just didn’t have chemistry on the field despite all of their combined talent. Since Messi was given first dibs on position, Griezmann was forced to play on the left wing instead of his usual center striker role. This made it nearly impossible for him to score, and he was eventually loaned back to Atlético Madrid where he got his confidence back and would eventually stay permanently!
5. Romelu Lukaku – Inter Milan to Chelsea (2021)
The next player with one of the worst soccer transfers in history is none other than Romelu Lukaku who was originally with Inter Milan. At Inter Milan, Lukaku dominated the Italian Serie A, scoring 24 league goals in 2020-21. This led to his previous club, Chelsea, returning with a €112 million offer to make him part of the Champions League winning squad once again. Despite how excited fans were about the transfer and the potential it had to be great, Lukaku only scored eight Premier League goals that season. He was eventually loaned back to Inter Milan before finally leaving Chelsea for a permanent signing with Napoli in 2024. His transfer story is now seen as a failed possibility of redemption!
6. Fernando Torres - Liverpool to Chelsea (2011)
Last but not least on our list of worst soccer player transfers of all time is Fernando Torres and his legendary downfall with Chelsea FC. When Torres first switched from Atletico Madrid to Liverpool his career really started to take off. He quickly made a name for himself as one of the best strikers in the world, which resulted in him capturing the attention of powerhouse club Chelsea during transfer season. They offered him a British record fee of £50 million and Torres thought making the switch would take his career to new heights. Even though he still won trophies and had some memorable moments with Chelsea, it never lived up to how unstoppable he was with Liverpool and fans continue to use this situation as a cautionary tale!
