Legendary Manchester City Players
From humble beginnings to becoming one of the greatest modern-day football teams, Manchester City stands tall above the rest! With many highs and lows, Manchester City has had a significant impact on English Football, spanning over 100 years. The club’s most recent era, however, has cemented their status as one of the most dominating teams in English football (or ‘soccer’ as we call it). From the club’s early days establishing their identity to their dominating performances in the Premier League competitions, Man City has been home to some of the most legendary players in the world. Kevin De Bruyne
First up on our list of legendary Manchester City players is one of the best midfielders of his generation, Kevin De Bruyne. De Bruyne joined the club in 2015 and, since then, the Belgian has gone on to become a global star with Manchester City, making 400 appearances to date. De Bruyne has also won 16 major trophies with Manchester City, including six Premier League titles and is one of only 19 players to score 100 goals for the club. Renowned for his passing, vision, shooting, and playmaking, De Bruyne is the creative genius behind many of the club’s most iconic attacking moves. De Bruyne’s ability to take control of any situation on the field has earned him comparisons to some of the greatest names in the game. He certainly has the skills to surpass other legends on this list in the years to come, however his place in Manchester City’s successful history has already been well earned.
Yaya Touré
Next up on our list of Manchester City legends is former midfielder, Yaya Touré. Signed from Barcelona in 2010, Touré established himself as one of the most influential Premier League players, as well as the heartbeat of Manchester City during his time. In fact, he played a pivotal role in the club’s back-to-back Premier League titles 2014-2016. Yaya won three Premier League titles, three League Cups, an FA Cup and Community Shield during his time with Manchester City. Touré was also voted African Footballer of the Year for 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. Considered one of the best midfielders of his generation, Touré was renowned for his strength, speed and power, making him one of the finest players to ever wear the Citizens shirt!
Vincent Kompany
We couldn’t have a list of the top Manchester City legends and not include the greatest Belgian defender in history, Vincent Kompany. He’s famously known to City fans around the world as ‘Captain Fantastic’ due to his many years of success at the club and trophy winning prowess. During his nearly decade-long career at the club, Kompany’s leadership resulted in the team winning four Premier League titles in 2012, 2014, 2018, and 2019 and two FA Cups in 2011 and 2019. As Manchester City’s captain for a majority of the 2010 era, he was praised for his leadership skills and ability to read the game unlike any other. Other trophies won by Kompany include four English League Cup titles and two English Super Cup titles. His individual awards include Premier League Player of the Season in 2012. David Silva
Also regarded as one of the most gifted players to ever represent Manchester City is Spanish midfielder, David Silva. Silva joined the club in 2010 and made his mark over the next decade, becoming one of the greatest attacking midfielders in history. Silva’s vision, passing range, and unwavering ability to make chances for teammates made him a crucial part of the team. During his career with Manchester City, Silva achieved some amazing assists and goals. He won four Premier League titles, two Fa Cup titles, five League Cup titles, and was the youngest player in history to reach 200 Premier League wins. His monumental success led to a statue being made in his honour, which can be seen outside the Etihad Stadium.
Colin Bell
The next player featured on our list of Manchester City legends is the only one to have a stand at the Etihad Stadium named after him. One of the greatest icons of Citizens is none other than Colin Bell. The Englishman spent over a decade with them and is loved by everyone connected to the club. His contributions to Manchester City in the 1960’s and 70’s helped take the team to glory and was an integral part of their established success. Considered a hero not only to City fans but soccer fans as a whole, Bell possessed a rare talent for technical skill, vision, and leadership. He could even score goals from midfield, which was considered vital for a player in his position! His goal scoring ability wasn’t his only talent worth noting – Bell was also praised for his top-quality dribbling. Throughout his career with Manchester City, Colin Bell scored over 150 times in 501 appearances for the club!
Sergio Aguero
Arguably, the best Manchester City player of all time is Argentinian striker, Sergio Aguero. Widely viewed as one of the best Premier League strikers of all time, Aguero has reached a legendary status that not many players can match. There’s no surprise that Aguero is the club’s all-time top scorer, with a whopping 260 goals in 390 appearances. He’s most famous for his unforgettable last-minute goal against QPR in 2012 that secured Manchester City’s first Premier League title in 44 years. This iconic moment in soccer history is still regarded as one of the most shocking moments in the Premier League. His other accomplishments with the club include the Premier League Golden Boot winner in 2014-15, seven Player of the Month awards, four English Champion titles, three English League cup titles and three English Super Cup titles. It’s no surprise that Sergio Aguero is often regarded as the best Manchester City player of all time!
