The 2026 Formula 1 season has already delivered more twists and turns than any of us could have expected! From the biggest regulation change in sport’s history to the arrival of a new team and the rise of Formula 1’s newest superstar, the first half of the season has been anything but predictable. While Mercedes has established itself as the team to beat for 2026, the second half of the championship is sure to be just as action-packed! 

One of the biggest talking points this season has been Formula 1’s brand-new regulations! With cards now relying on an even split between electrical power and internal combustion, energy management has become more important than ever. Fans have also had to adjust to the introduction of “Overtake Mode”, which replaced the traditional Drag Reduction System (DRS). While the changes were designed to create closer racing, they haven’t been the most popular among fans and drivers. Four-time World Champion Max Verstappen has been very open about his dislike of Overtake Mode, criticizing the heavy reliance on energy deployment and what he calls “yo-yo racing”, where drivers keep swapping positions instead of making decisive overtakes. 

Along with the regulation changes also came several new faces and partnerships across the grid! Cadillac officially joined Formula 1 as the championship's 11th team, bringing experienced race winners Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas back in the running. Audi also made its long-awaited arrival by taking over Kick Sauber, while Ford partnered with Racing Bulls and Red Bull, Honda moved to Aston Martin, and Alpine became a Mercedes team. So many changes since last season! 

Although George Russel entered the season as one of the favourites after winning the opening race in Australia, it didn’t take long for his teammate Kimi Antonelli to steal the show. The 19-year-old race driver won his first victory in China before following it up with another win in Japan to become the youngest driver in history to lead the Drivers’ Championship. Antonelli then had an amazing winning streak, winning five consecutive Grand Prix between China and Monaco, a record-breaking streak for any driver after claiming their first Formula 1 victory. Even though issues with reliability eventually ended his winning run in Spain and another mechanical problem cost him points at Silverstone, he bounced back quickly with his victory in Belgium. Antonelli heads into the summer break with a 50-point lead over Lewis Hamilton and looks to be on his way to becoming the youngest World Champion in history! 

While Kimi Antonelli’s success story has been a major highlight from the first half, Lewis Hamilton has still been reminding everyone why he’s one of the greatest drivers in the world! After a difficult first season with Ferrari, Hamilton has had a strong run this year, earning five podium finishes, including his long-awaited victory in Spain. George Russell has also shown his skills, claiming victories in Australia and Austria, but reliability issues, penalties, and some bad luck have kept him from keeping up with his teammate. 

The 2026 season hasn’t been without some controversy either! During the Monaco Grand Prix, an error in the FIA's pit lane speed calculations resulted in several drivers receiving penalties they shouldn't have. Alpine successfully appealed Pierre Gasly's penalties and restored his podium finish, while drivers like George Russell, who had already served their penalties during the race, were unable to have theirs reversed. It was one of the most frustrating controversies Formula 1 has seen in a long time and left fans questioning how similar situations should be handled in the future.

Formula 1 2026 has also experienced an unexpected interruption after the Japanese Grand Prix! The Bahrain and Saudi Arabian races were cancelled because of the war in Iran, forcing F1 into a month-long break while they searched for a replacement. It was confirmed that Malaysia's Sepang International Circuit will return to the calendar later this season, while other options are still being explored for Qatar and Abu Dhabi.

Finally, the first half of the 2026 Formula 1 season has proven that this new era of racing is sure to go down in history for having so many unforgettable moments! From Kimi Antonelli’s rise to fame to the battle between Mercedes and Ferrari, or the uncertainty of “Overtake Mode”, fans have been on the edge of their seats through it all. With 12 races coming up after the summer break, the championship is far from over, and fans can still expect even more drama, action, and iconic moments as Formula 1 continues with the Dutch Grand Prix running from August 21 to August 23!
