Spain vs. Argentina (Spain Wins 1-0) Recap
Spain's incredible World Cup journey came to an end in the best possible way as they defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time to become 2026 FIFA World Cup champions! Throughout the match, Spain demonstrated impressive control and possession skills, frustrating Argentina from beginning to end. Despite having the G.O.A.T (Greatest of all time) Lionel Messi, Argentina managed just two shots across the entire 120 minutes of the match. The big moment finally arrived in the 105th minute of extra time. Pedro Porro sent a cross into the box, where Nico Williams headed the ball across to Ferran Torres. Torres was in the right place at the right time and sent the shot into the back of the net, scoring the biggest goal of his career and giving Spain the lead they had been searching for. It was Torres' first goal of the tournament, but it ended up being the moment that secured Spain's second World Cup title.
Argentinaโs chance of winning became even more difficult after midfielder Enzo Fernรกndez got a second yellow card, forcing them to finish the match with only 10 players. Although Argentina gave everything they had in the final moments, Spain's defence stayed strong until the final whistle. After Spain realized they had won, emotional celebrations began as the players rushed onto the field to congratulate them becoming world champions! Spain pulled off one of the greatest defensive tournaments in the history of the World Cup! Throughout eight matches, Spain conceded only one goal, setting a new record for the fewest goals scored on a World Cup winner. The victory also extended Spainโs unbeaten streak to 38 matches, further solidifying their place as one of the strongest international teams.ย
One of the biggest storylines leading up to the final was the first-ever battle between Lionel Messi and 19-year-old Lamine Yamal. Despite both players not managing to score any goals during the match, many fans said it felt symbolic for the future of soccer and what this means for the new generations of players. Although Messiโs dream of becoming the first captain since Brazil to win back-to-back World Cups didnโt work out, Yamal became one of the youngest players to ever win the World Cup trophy!
