Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about Onside: Major League Soccer and why it’s worth the binge-watch!

What is ‘Onside: Major League Soccer’ About?

The documentary takes fans beyond the MLS field and exposes the rivalries and personal moments that we didn’t get to see throughout the 2024 season. You’ll get to witness the stories behind the games as some of the league’s biggest clubs go head-to-head – such as LA Galaxy, FC Cincinnati, Atlanta United, and Inter Miami CF. The first episode kicks off with LA Galaxy and Inter Miami preparing for their first-week matchup and as the story progresses, you’ll see more of the teams as they train, welcome new players, and face off to win the championship. You’ll even see some familiar faces, like Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez, while the show explores rivalries, injuries and a typical day-to-day life in the world of professional soccer.

Onside also follows the “Hell is Real” rivalry between Columbus Crew and FC Cincinnati, including the different coaching styles of Pat Noonan and Wilfried Nancy that define the clubs’ identities as a whole. One of the most interesting storylines in the show covers one of the youngest players to debut with Major League Soccer. At just 14-years-old, Cavan Sullivan from the Philadelphia Union finds his life turned upside down, where the stakes are higher than ever before and he must find a balance between being a kid, but also a professional athlete, and the challenges that come with it. Viewers will also be introduced to other up-and-coming players, like former Barcelona footballer Riqui Puig, as well as interviews with owners, like Inter Miami co-owner and president David Beckham!

What Makes ‘Onside’ Stand Out from Other Docuseries’?

The highly rated Apple TV+ series isn’t the first sports documentary by a long shot, but the filming style is what makes it truly unique! The film crew had basically unlimited access to where they could film. Cameras would follow players throughout practice, in locker rooms, in boardrooms, or at their family homes, and they were able to capture some of the most emotional moments we’ve ever seen in a sports docuseries. It wasn’t only the up-close access that made these scenes possible, but the production's decision to keep the camera crew super small so the players could forget they were even being filmed and just be in the moment. Critics have praised the show for making the larger-than-life players feel very relatable and human. The fact that the entire show is based on North American soccer also makes it stand out. While top European leagues are very exclusive with what they allow outsiders to see, Major League Soccer was willing to give creators full access, which is pretty unheard of in a world where even reality shows are scripted!

Will There Be Another Season?

As of right now, we don’t have official confirmation that a new season is in the works, but it’s very likely! The first and only season of Onside: Major League Soccer covers the 2024 MLS season and was released in February 2025. Winley, the MLS executive vice president, said the league will be monitoring feedback about the project while planning for a second series of episodes next winter.

“The stories can continue,” he said. “It’s rare that any production company would come into this with the hope of it being one season. So, we’re hoping that it’s going to be a multi-season process. And I believe Apple is hoping the same.”

Now that you know ‘Onside: Major League Soccer’ is worth watching, what are you waiting for? The 8-part docuseries isn’t just made for hardcore MLS supporters – it’s for any fan of the beautiful game who wants to see what it’s really like to be a professional athlete in the league and the pressure that comes with it. From MLS legends to rising stars, prepare to witness the most exclusive behind-the-scenes content you’ve ever seen in a sports documentary!
