Euro 2024 Highlights
The 2024 UEFA EURO tournament has finally come to a heart wrenching conclusion after 4 weeks with a total of 51 games and a whopping 117 goals scored! The thrilling 2024 season where 24 teams battled for glory across various cities in Germany captivated fans worldwide with its thrilling matches, unexpected goals, and unforgettable moments. However, there could only be one winner crowned and fans were on the edge of their seats during the long-awaited finals that took place on Sunday, July 14th. Arguably the best team in the tournament, Spain, claimed their fourth winning title after playing in a critical match against England in Berlin. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights from 2024 Euro that will be etched in the minds of fans for years to come!
Fastest Goal
The first highlight from the 2024 EURO that will never be forgotten was when fans witnessed the fastest goal ever scored at a European Championship. The atmosphere was described as electric by onlookers and the stirring rendition of the Albanian national anthem was still echoing around the stadium when Nedim Bajrami found the net inside 23 seconds, scoring a record-breaking goal against Italy that had the crowd in disbelief! Bajrami broke the previous Euros record for the quickest goal of 67 seconds by Dmitri Kirichenko of Russia against Greece in 2004.
Cutest Moment
Possibly the cutest moment in 2024 Euro was when a young fan breached security in the second half of Portugal’s 3-0 win over Turkey to take a selfie with Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo was more than happy to pose for the harmless photo after the young fan evaded stewards to get on the field for a chance to meet his greatest idol.
Biggest Plot Twist
Another shocking moment that’ll go down in Euro history was in the match with Albania vs Croatia that ended with 2-2. Albania midfielder Klaus Gjasula went from zero to hero as he scored in his own net before redeeming himself only fifteen minutes later with a goal on the opposing team. This turn of events has never happened before in any previous Euro championship to date. We’re calling this the biggest plot twist of 2024 Euro!
Most Unexpected Win
Considered one of the most miraculous moments and biggest upsets in European Championship history was when Georgia qualified to the Round of 16 after beating Portugal 2-0. At the start of the tournament, few would’ve predicted the Georgians would make it through, and yet they landed a top 16 spot on their debut in a major tournament!
Best Goal
Arguably, the most noteworthy player of the 2024 Euro tournament is rising star, Lamine Yamal. Known as being the youngest player to compete in the European Championship, the 17-year-old wonderkid earned his spot among the greatest players of the beautiful game with his outstanding performances this season. His record-breaking moment in the semifinal is one of those moments you’ll never forget witnessing, as Yamal’s glorious goal brought Spain level against France. Not only has Lamine Yamal exited this tournament as the European Championship’s youngest goal scorer, but no other player assisted more goals or created more chances than Yamal this summer!
Best Player
The best player of the 2024 Euro season is none other than Spain midfielder Rodri, who has earned the official title of ‘UEFA EURO 2024 Player of the Tournament.’ With a final passing accuracy of 92.84% in the tournament, Rodri helped lead his team to the ultimate glory, beating four former world champions in the process.
Biggest Disappointment
Despite all of the highs of the tournament, there have been some lows that have left fans feeling disappointed with the performance of their favourite teams and players. One of the most rooted for players was Kylian Mbappe, whose only goal this tournament came from the penalty spot. Fans also expected much more from Ronaldo’s Portugal, who was considered a top contender for the winning title. Unfortunately, Portugal’s journey ended in the quarterfinals despite their talented squad!
Best Win
Finally, the best win of the 2024 UEFA Euro Tournament goes to none other Spain, marking its fourth European Championship title, a record for the tournament! Completing a tournament the team consistently dominated from start to finish, Spain beat England in the final match 2-1. Backup striker Mikel Oyarzabal is to thank for the winning goal, who successfully executed it in the 86th minute when the game at Berlin's Olympiastadion seemed destined for extra time.
