Day in the Life of a Professional Soccer Referee

When it comes to soccer, the spotlight often shines the brightest on the players, but also on the field is someone with a role that’s just as crucial to the match: the referee. Just like professional soccer players dedicate countless hours to training, referees prepare for a match with equal intensity. In order to be the best, a professional soccer referee must master the art of tactics, stay fit to be able to keep up with the players, and make spur of the moment decisions under intense pressure. While you may think of referees as being glorified rule enforcers, they’re so much more than that! Referees are the silent leaders of fairness, making sure the game is played within the laws while also keeping the flow. World renowned referees like Pierluigi Collina, Mark Clattenburg and, Nicola Rizzoli mastered the art with their leadership skills, composure and consistency on the pitch. They’ve demonstrated that being a referee isn’t just a support role, it’s a task that, when done correctly, can make or break the game. It’s a way of life centered around daily routines, travel, and training to prepare for the next upcoming match. We’ve looked into your favourite referees and what they do on a day-to-day basis to stay sharp, fit, and prepared. Let’s take a behind-the-scenes look at the life of a professional soccer referee and what a typical day looks like when you're the person in the middle of the pitch!
7:00 AM – Pre-Match Prep
One thing all soccer referees have in common is waking up at the crack of dawn to begin preparing for a match. They often start the day off with some light physical activity, like jogging, stretching or running, to get energized. Next up is a healthy breakfast to fuel them for the long day ahead, and a mental run-through of what’s to come. No matter what each referee does to get in the right mindset on the day of a match, all of them do things to set themselves up for success so they can stay calm and focused. Many take time to review match assignments, game footage, or tactical notes on the teams they’ll be officiating.
10:30 AM – Team Meeting & Travel
Many referees do their travelling to the game on the day of the match, unless they decide to travel the night before and stay in a hotel. Referees don’t show up to a match venue solo, they’re part of a team of officiants. There’s typically a center referee, 2 assistant referees (the ones with the flags), and a fourth official handling subs, coaches, and any sideline issues. They’ll meet up, gear up, and head to the stadium together. On the way to the match, they’ll figure out the game plan, go over key factors like player behaviour, recent form, or any known tension between the teams that they should be aware of.
12:00 PM – Stadium Arrival & Pre-Match Briefing
Once everyone gets to the stadium, it’s time to do any last-minute preparations or planning before the match. The referee crew checks in with match organizers, confirms the equipment is in working order (communication headsets, watches, etc.) and inspects the pitch. They’ll then head to the referee room, which is a sterile area where phones and TVs aren’t allowed in order to protect integrity. The next step is the briefing which involves the stakes, player history, team styles, and potential hot spots. If there’s VAR (Video Assistant Referee), which there typically is, the team will also run through all of the necessary checks and protocols. When you think about it, it’s basically like preparing for an important exam and getting all of your last-minute studying in before it begins!
1:30 PM – Warm-Up
Before the players go to the field, the referees will do a full-warm up to prepare themselves for the physical demands of the match. Remember, the job isn’t just a mental battle. They’ll do various exercises like sprint drills and stretches. This warm-up time may seem tedious when you have a million tactics running through your mind just before a match, but they have to be ready to cover up to eight miles, which is no easy feat. It’s like being a marathon runner, tactical analyst, and peacekeeper at the same time!
2:00 PM – Match Begins
The moment everyone’s been preparing for since the crack of dawn is finally here! The next 90 minutes are complete chaos and intensity for the referees. They’re constantly tracking fouls, managing the temperament of the team, watching and keeping up with the players to make sure they don’t miss anything. Every call a referee makes has consequences and they must also be prepared to be yelled at by players, coaches, and crowds.
4:00 PM – Post Match & Debrief
After the final whistle, there’s a quick cool-down where the referees can jog, rehydrate, and review their performance throughout the match. In their minds they’ll be asking themselves if they missed something or if they could’ve handled something differently. Just like us, referees are their own harshest critics. Post match, they’ll also spend time speaking to the assessor and listening to their feedback. Then the referee will head home and maybe call the coach and talk about the game some more and what the assessor discussed!
6:00 PM – Back Home
Just because the referee is back home, doesn’t mean their day is done. Preparing starts all over again and they might take some time to rewatch parts of the game. Refs also commonly send clips of the game to their coach, sports psychologist, colleagues, or the Professional Game Match Officials Limited portal for feedback. This is an important step that many rely on to develop their skills and get advice on how to be better going forward. And if there’s another match soon, the prep starts all over again!
Now that you have a better idea of the absolute chaos involved when being a professional soccer referee, is it as glamorous as you originally thought? Referees don't get the recognition they deserve for such a demanding career. Unlike the players, refs don’t get cheers, no one buys their jersey, and they certainly aren’t praised alongside Messi or Ronaldo. But despite all of this, they still wake up every day passionate about the role they play in the world’s most beautiful game!
