2026 FIFA World Cup: Everything We Know So Far

The countdown is on for the highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup, a spectacle that’s shaping up to be an event like no other in the world of soccer! Every World Cup is unique from the rest and every tournament takes you to a different part of the globe. The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the 23rd edition of the tournament, but it’s the first one to feature 48 teams (from 32 teams originally) and three host countries: Canada, Mexico and the United States. The event promises to be the biggest edition ever globally, with these three countries coming together to create one of the most groundbreaking tournaments in soccer history. More hosts mean more matches and fans will be thrilled to hear that there will be a whopping 104 matches taking place – 40 more than in Qatar – bringing even more nations into the spotlight!
Alongside these huge changes announced already, it’s also been shared that, for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, not a single stadium will be built to host the games. Mexico is no stranger to hosting the World Cup – in fact, they’re set to break the record for the number of organized World Cups, as the tournament will be held there for a third time. On top of all of these huge changes, FIFA has also decided to revamp the format for 2026. The upcoming tournament will feature 48 teams divided into 12 groups of four. Two teams from each group will be promoted to the next stage of the competition together with the eight best third-place teams. This means that 32 teams will meet in the second stage. You may recall the initial 2026 World Cup format was slightly different from this updated one. Originally, the 48 teams were supposed to get divided into 16 groups of 3. But the FIFA Council decided to change this. As FIFA's official website states, the new format “mitigates the risk of collusion and ensures that all the teams play a minimum of three matches while providing balanced rest time between competing teams”. Since changes were made to the overall format, the qualifications have also been altered slightly. The number of spots available to teams from each confederation has been increased for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. On top of this, the OFC (Oceania Football Confederation) has been given one guaranteed place in the tournament, which it previously didn’t have. Also, two additional World Cup 2026 participants will be selected in a play-off mini tournament. Every confederation except Europe will be taking part in this new qualifier.
For all of us in North America, the excitement is at an all-time high! As the host nations, the United States, Canada, and Mexico are automatically qualified for the 2026 tournament, this guarantees we’ll have a strong representation on our own home turf. Some of the most iconic and state of the art stadiums will be featured across North America this time around. 11 cities will host matches across the United States, including venues like MetLife Stadium, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, and Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. Mexico is also geared up to bring their passion for soccer to the tournament with their stadiums in cities across Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. This is the very first time that Canada will host a men’s World Cup match, with Toronto and Vancouver being at the forefront! Canada has previously hosted women’s World Cups and other international sporting events, but 2026 marks the first time Canadian fans can watch a men’s World Cup match on Canadian soil.
