2026-27 Premier League Season: Everything You Need to Know

2026-27 Premier League Season: Everything You Need to Know

It feels like we were just watching the last Premier League season come to an end, and now it’s already time for another one! The 2026-27 EPL season is officially kicking off on August 21, 2026, with defending champions Arsenal taking on newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium! This season is starting a little later than usual because of the expanded FIFA World Cup, giving players some extra time to recover before jumping back into another busy football schedule. The new season will feature 33 weekends of matches and five midweek Match Rounds, with the final matches taking place on May 30, 2027. The fixtures for the season have already been released, so make sure to add your favourite matches to your calendar! To find out everything you need to know about the upcoming season including the fixture schedule, keep reading!

Who Was Promoted?

Every year, we have to say goodbye to a few teams and welcome some new ones into the Premier League! This season, Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City are all joining the league after earning promotion from the Championship. Coventry City finished at the top of the Championship table to earn automatic promotion, with Ipswich Town finishing second and securing their spot in the Premier League. Hull City then won the playoffs to become the third and final team promoted. Getting promoted is a huge accomplishment, but staying in the Premier League is a whole different challenge. These three teams will now be facing some of the biggest clubs in English football (or soccer as we call it). Coventry City will have a pretty tough start to their Premier League return, heading to the Emirates to face defending champions Arsenal in the very first match of the season. Hull City will also have a big challenge right away when they host Manchester United, while Ipswich Town will face Sunderland at home. It’s always fun to see the newly promoted teams come into the league and see how they handle the competition, so we’ll definitely be keeping an eye on them this season!

What Are the New Rules This Season?

As with every season, there are a few new rules coming to the Premier League for 2026-27! This year a lot of the changes are focused on reducing time-wasting and keeping the game moving, which should hopefully mean a more exciting match overall!

Substitutions

One of the changes fans might notice right away involves substitutions. Players who are being taken off will now have 10 seconds to leave the field at the nearest available point. If a player takes longer than 10 seconds without a valid reason, their replacement won’t be allowed onto the pitch right away. The substitute will have to wait until the next stoppage after one minute has passed before they can enter, meaning their team will temporarily have to play with 10 players. The rule is meant to stop players from taking their time when leaving the pitch, especially when their team is trying to run down the clock late in a match!

Throw-Ins and Goal Kicks

There are also new time limits for throw-ins and goal kicks! If a referee believes a player is deliberately delaying a throw-in, they can start a five-second countdown. If the player doesn’t restart play within those five seconds, the throw-in will be given to the opposing team. Goal kicks will work in a similar way. If a team takes too long to restart play after being awarded a goal kick, the referee can start the five-second countdown. If the time runs out, the opposing team will be awarded a corner instead. These changes are another attempt to cut down on those little delays that can add up throughout a match.

Injured Players

Another change this season involves players who receive treatment or an injury assessment while on the pitch. Previously, Premier League players who received treatment were required to leave the field for 30 seconds. This has now increased to at least one minute. There are some exceptions, so players won’t automatically have to leave for a minute in every situation. But for injuries that require treatment or assessment on the field, fans can expect to see players spending a little more time on the sidelines before returning to the game.

VAR Changes

VAR is also getting a small change this season! It will now be able to review situations where a player receives a second yellow card that results in a red card. This doesn’t mean VAR will be checking every yellow card or deciding whether a player deserved their first yellow. The change specifically applies when a second yellow card has been given and the player has been sent off. The Premier League is also continuing to focus on making VAR decisions quicker and more efficient overall.

When Does the Season End?

The 2026/27 Premier League season will officially wrap up on Sunday, May 30, 2027, with all 10 matches kicking off at the same time for the final day of the season! There will be 33 weekends of matches along with five midweek Match Rounds, giving fans plenty of games to keep up with throughout the year.

The Christmas schedule will also be a little different this season. To help give players more time to recover during one of the busiest parts of the calendar, no two Match Rounds will take place within 60 hours of each other over the Christmas and New Year period. There will also be a fuller schedule of Premier League matches on Boxing Day this season!
