2016-17 La Liga is here and ready to steal the spotlight! La Liga is the top professional soccer league of the Spanish league system and consists of 20 competing teams.  Teams to play within the league each year are determined from last year’s and current results: the three lowest-placed teams are relegated to the Segunda División and replaced with the top two teams of that division, along with the winner of a play-off.

60 teams in total have played in the league, with nine teams claiming the title. Real Madrid has won the most championships by claiming the title 32 times.  Barcelona is in second with 24 title wins, but has gradually been gaining titles since the 1990s, slowly catching up to the Real Madrid leaders!

This year’s games will begin on August 19^th, 2016 and continue for a total of 38 matchweeks with the final games being played on May 21^st, 2017.  Each club will play a game a week, facing each team twice – once at home and once away.
